Trelawney Fish

Established in 1982, Trelawney Fish is a wholesale and retail fish merchants based on the Quay at Newlyn.  It has two of its own trawlers.

Managing Director Godfrey Adams says ‘Broadband has transformed some aspects of our operation.

‘We used to have a buyer who would travel up and down to the Plymouth Fish Market, day in, day out.  Now we buy from the Plymouth Fish Market through their online auction, saving us a huge amount of time and money. Everything is there on the screen in front of you. It is so much easier, it really has revolutionised our buying processes. Now you can buy from anywhere at all. In theory, you could do it from bed!’

Godfrey continues ‘We also carry out some of our selling online. For example, there is one French supermarket that places all of its orders online.

‘What’s more, we are really making the most of broadband to promote our business to customers. Our website is a great shop window for us and because of broadband, we can update the website ourselves, simply and easily.

‘We have also started using email marketing to reach out to customers. We target specific customer segments, for example those that have not bought from us for a while or those that have never bought, and tailor specific email marketing campaigns aimed at them. Because of broadband, this is an incredibly cost effective form of promotion.

Trelawney’s marketing processes are integrated with their state of the art satellite communication system that allows hem to stay in contact with their trawlers even when they are more than 30 miles from land, where mobile phones cannot operate.

Godfrey says ‘This means we know what the trawlers have caught and when they expect to be back in Newlyn, so we can set up the marketing and sales of their catch in advance and ensure we get the best price for their catch.’

Since installing broadband, Godfrey says they also carry out more of their purchasing of supplies online. ‘If we need any parts for the fishing vessels or the office, we will invariably research the items and buy them online nowadays. This is a big advantage when you are based so far away from anywhere and means you can buy competitively,   saving the business money.

‘IT and broadband have made all the difference to the way we run Trelawney Fish, streamlining the operation and making us more productive.’
