Farmer Films 'Cargoes' Project

Paul Farmer, a film maker and writer, is keeping the Cornish film industry ahead of the game with his project ‘Cargoes’, perhaps the first online internet experience of its kind.  As part of his ‘Time & Space’ initiative, supported by Arts Council South West, Paul filmed his experiences on a gruelling voyage on a freighter ship from France to the Caribbean, Central and South America.  The end result is a growing collection of short flash films hosted on his streaming media site www.farmerfilm.com

“I look for ideas that I find fascinating and seem impossible.  Streaming video in this way is unbelievably difficult - each short film takes about a week to make."

As the project’s specific focus is films on the Internet, broadband is an essential element of Paul’s work.

“The amount of time I save due to my broadband connection is incredible. It makes all the production work on the website ten times easier than dial up.”

Paul has found as part of his work in schools teaching and developing poetry that image and poetry work very well together.  He now demonstrates this by encouraging students to go online and see it for themselves.

“Broadband will play an important role in future film.  I don’t believe the internet is currently being effectively utilized as a medium for the expression of art but I hope that it soon will be and that Cornish businesses like mine will be at the forefront of its progression.”
