Internet telephony (VoIP)

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) basically means cheap or free telephone calls! This may sound too good to be true but it is!

Once you have paid for a broadband connection browsing the Internet is free. VoIP phone calls use the Internet to send your voice data, and since using the Internet is free your phone call is free.

In order to make a free VoIP call, both parties will need to be connected to the Internet and have a VoIP phone or headset. They will also need to have installed appropriate software on their PCs. Don’t worry - plenty of companies, like skype, BT broadband voice,Gossiptel, Sipgate, Telappliant or Vonage, are making the required software freely available.

You can even make cheaper phone calls to the other party’s normal phone if they do not have a VoIP phone. Once you have set up an appropriate account, calling Australia will cost you only 1p per minute. Now that’s cheap!
