Jobs in Cornwall

Richard Crocker runs Jobs in Cornwall, a website based business that he set up three years ago.  From the outset the business used broadband:

“Broadband was the foundation stone of our business.  We publish job advertisements for businesses who have vacancies and provide information for job seekers.  We operate an ultra low cost business model where most of our services and processes are online so broadband is essential to the way Jobs in Cornwall runs.

“We deliver our sales product through broadband and use technologies that require broadband - for example, our website and database are hosted by an external server which we access remotely using a type of VPN [Virtual Private Network] system.  Our database is becoming increasingly important to us as a marketing tool.”

Richard also finds broadband useful for installing software upgrades and maintaining anti-virus protection. With the always-on connection, any updates are automatically and easily installed ensuring that his computer is always protected and up to date.

“One piece of software we are currently looking into is using text messaging - an application which sits well with broadband.  I have been able to download a range of trial text messaging programmes and then choose which is best for our purposes.  With dial up I just wouldn’t have had the time for this.”

The business also seeks to source and purchase from suppliers online:

“We haven’t met many of our suppliers because all of our dealings have been online.  We can search for information on their products, place and pay for orders all via the internet so meeting face to face just isn’t necessary.  Communication with our suppliers is often done by instant messaging - we have a great relationship with our technical support and normally work with them this way.”
