Selling Sciences
Rod McCarron is a Partner for ‘Selling Sciences’, a business consulting company as well as being commercial director for Mikkom, a mobile communications company.
He works from a number of different locations – his home office in Porthleven, offices in Windsor and Watlington, and is also overseas for a couple of weeks each month.
He says "I find that with broadband I am just as enabled at home as I am in the office.
"Broadband also means I can organise my trips better and by taking advantage of wireless broadband hotspots such as BT Openzone, I can stay up to date wherever I am. I am also using my mobile phone on GPRS as a data modem when I cannot get to a WiFi circuit easily. I no longer feel that I have to head back to the office to catch up with everything that has happened since I left.
"Broadband makes research of client accounts much easier – now I can do it all online instead of having to go to libraries. Similarly I can keep abreast of industry trends and news by tapping in to the news feeds available on the internet. I also do all my accounts, invoicing, payments and communications electronically, so hardly have to use paper at all any more.
"Although the nature of my work means I still have to travel extensively, I have been able to cut down on my travel and consolidate trips, with resultant fuel savings. For example, I now carry out conferencing with Skype, particularly useful for those internal company meetings that are necessary but can be time consuming and I don’t need to go anywhere to carry out the business banking – I do it all online.
"One aspect I was not expecting was that I have found that broadband plus this desirable location is encouraging my work colleagues to request the necessary face to face meetings in my home office which is also helping to reduce the requirements on me to travel."
